OpenAI announces major updates for ChatGPT Pro & Business users: doubled Work & Codex limits, a unified Chat/Work interface, and a merged token usage pool.
OpenAI is preparing to roll out several major updates for ChatGPT users. Specifically for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers, the company is doubling usage limits for Work and Codex, while also working to merge standard Chat and Work capabilities into a single, seamless user experience.
These updates will be particularly impactful for users who rely on AI for daily workflows, software development, and complex project execution.
1. ChatGPT Pro Usage Limits Doubled
Effective October 29, 2026, OpenAI has increased the usage limits for Work and Codex features across Pro and Business Premium plans:
- Pro ($100): Usage limits for Work and Codex have been doubled compared to previous caps.
- Pro ($200): The previously planned reduction in usage limits has been canceled. Users who were under lower caps have had their limits doubled to match standard Pro ($200) users.
- Pro ($500): Usage limits for Work and Codex have been doubled.
- Business Premium: Usage limits for Work and Codex have been increased.
(Note: This does not mean all ChatGPT usage limits have doubled across the board. For example, weekly message limits for GPT-6 Pro in standard Chat remain unchanged by this update.)
2. Unifying ChatGPT Chat and Work into One Interface
Another major initiative from OpenAI is combining standard Chat and Work experiences into a single interface.
Currently, standard Chat is primarily used for asking questions, brainstorming, and general daily tasks. Conversely, ChatGPT Work is engineered to automate complex, multi-step operations, enabling users to:
- Search websites and compile comprehensive research reports.
- Analyze complex files and documents.
- Generate presentations, spreadsheets, and detailed reports.
- Interact with connected applications.
- Perform multi-step web tasks directly through a browser interface.
- Work sequentially on intricate long-term projects.
Under the new unified design, users will be able to start a conversation in standard Chat and seamlessly transition into complex Work tasks within the exact same thread—eliminating the friction of switching between separate modes. OpenAI notes that this unified experience will initially undergo testing with a limited user group before rolling out globally.
3. Merged Usage Limits for ChatGPT and Codex
One of the most notable announcements is the merging of separate usage allowances for ChatGPT and Codex into a single shared pool.
According to updated information on the OpenAI Help Center, starting December 2026, Plus, Pro, and Business plans will introduce a unified usage allowance for both ChatGPT and Codex.
Key details of the token-based structure:
- Token Consumption: Usage is calculated based on tokens consumed, which varies depending on the specific AI model selected.
- Task Complexity: Advanced models handling complex tasks will consume tokens at a higher rate compared to simple queries.
- Standard Chat Exemption: Standard instant chat interactions will not deduct from this unified usage pool.
- Usage Tracking: Users can monitor their remaining unified allowance and reset schedules via Settings → Usage.
If a user exhausts their usage pool before the reset date, they can choose to wait for the reset, upgrade their subscription tier, or purchase add-on credits for supported features.
Impact on Professionals
- Software Developers: Can seamlessly execute programming and debugging via Codex while running background research and documentation through ChatGPT Work.
- Content Creators: Can manage research, content planning, and document generation within a unified workspace.
However, because ChatGPT and Codex will share a single usage pool, heavy power users utilizing AI extensively for both coding and workflow automation will need to actively monitor and manage their token consumption.
