Google Privacy Policy Update: Can Gmail & Photos Data Shape Your Ads?

Google Privacy Policy Update: Can Gmail & Photos Data Shape Your Ads?

Google's updated privacy policy introduces a conditional exception for using connected Gmail, Drive, and Photos data for ad personalization. Learn what changed and how to manage your privacy settings.

Recent updates to Google’s privacy policy have sparked intense discussions regarding data privacy and targeted advertising. With the rapid integration of artificial intelligence features—such as Google's Personal Intelligence and AI-powered search tools—users are increasingly questioning how their private communications, documents, and media are handled.

What Actually Changed in Google’s Privacy Policy?

For years, Google maintained a strict, blanket guarantee regarding user privacy: “We don't show you personalized ads based on your content from Drive, Gmail, or Photos.”

However, under updated policy terms, Google modified this stance by introducing a conditional exception clause: Google does not use content from Drive, Gmail, or Google Photos for personalized ads unless you choose to make data from these services available to other Google services that support personalized ads.

The Role of AI and "Personal Intelligence"

This shift is directly tied to features that allow Google's AI models (like Gemini and AI Mode in Search) to access your connected Workspace apps and photo libraries to perform helpful tasks—such as pulling flight details from an email or summarizing document attachments.

When users explicitly connect their content apps to these intelligence features, summaries, excerpts, or inferences drawn by the AI may be utilized to make advertisements more contextually relevant. Google emphasizes that raw inbox contents or private photos are not scanned directly for traditional advertising profiles, but data processed through connected AI experiences can intersect with ad personalization.

How to Protect Your Privacy and Opt Out

If you prefer to keep your Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos entirely separate from ad-targeting or AI-driven personalization, you can manage your preferences using the following steps:

  1. Disconnect Content Apps:
    • Open your Google Account settings and go to Data & privacy.
    • Navigate to Personalization settings $\rightarrow$ Manage Personalized Recommendations in Search Services.
    • Under Additional Personal Intelligence, check Connected Content apps and disconnect Google Workspace and Google Photos if you do not want Search or AI tools accessing your files.
  2. Review Search Services History:
    • Remember that disconnecting apps does not automatically erase historical data previously stored by search services. Be sure to clear relevant logs manually via your My Activity page.
  3. Adjust Ad Personalization:
    • Visit My Ad Center within your Google account settings to toggle off personalized ads entirely or restrict data usage.
